They usually reside in the Eldritch Ocean Abyss. In video games, Kraken often have Cognizant Limbs, with their tentacles being considered separate from the body as enemies. Interestingly, a common theme in sea monster stories is of two contrasting sea beasts that are each other's mortal enemy, and sperm whales, the largest predatory whale and deepest diver, are believed to hunt giant squid. However, since actual Nautical Folklore says that the Kraken could be mistaken for an entire chain of islands, one can reasonably infer that it was imagined to be much bigger than most film depictions. Kraken, on the other hand, are Tentacled Terrors believed to be inspired by giant squid note although they are usually depicted as octopuses, and most early accounts were very sparse on their appearance and tended to focus on their resemblance to islands, and when most people think of a kraken, they tend to imagine a a squid-like creature that is simply many times bigger than a real one. In modern fiction, leviathans are typically interpreted as outsized sea dragons, Sea Serpents, giant fish or Monster Whales. Strangely, the actual biblical description of a leviathan suggests that it has legs and is able to move on land, and seems to refer to armour plates or scales (in fact, if one ignores the Word of Dante and the fire-breathing, it sounds quite like a very large crocodile). (Notably, the "big fish" that swallowed Jonah was often interpreted as a whale or leviathan but nowadays people are having a lot of fun with it as a Megalodon.) Indeed, the modern Hebrew word for whale is לויתן, or leviathan. The Leviathan in the Bible is often taken to be a view of a whale and is sometimes translated directly as whale. Lobsters occur with surprising regularity, for some reason. However, since Our Monsters Are Different, the title of kraken or leviathan may be given to all kinds of terrors of the deep. The Kraken tends to take the form of a tentacle-laced Giant Squid or octopus, while the Leviathan is more variable, ranging from a colossal whale to a massive sea serpent. There will be little shyness about their inspirations, they'll be unabashedly named after the Scandinavian legend of Kraken or the biblical Leviathan. ![]() If they're not Eldritch Abominations, they're the next best thing. Cards provide buffs too, like the ability to damage enemies by dashing through them or an added poison effect to your hits. Your hand determines which weapon Even wields, arming her with hammers, bows, and spears, while some cards become placeable objects and traps like cannons, bombs, time warps, and summons. Only Avast and Bitdefender managed perfect scores with both labs. Kaspersky earned a perfect score from AV-Comparatives, and Norton from AV-Test. Having excellent scores from one lab puts Intego in good company. This time around, it pulled its AV-Comparatives score up to a shiny 100%, and managed 97% against those pesky PUAs. At the time of my last review, it scored poorly at detecting Windows malware, managing 28% with AV-Comparatives and 0% with AV-Test. Intego's documentation points that it also detects Windows-centric malware, so your Mac doesn't become a carrier of contagion, spreading infection to Windows boxes. And it retains AV-Comparatives certification. AV-Test has cut back the number of products in its latest tests and doesn’t currently include Intego, but it’s good to know that it did score well in past tests. At that time, it scored 100% detection against Mac malware and also did well when AV-Test challenged it to block less-risky PUAs, or potentially unwanted applications. When I last evaluated it, Intego appeared in lab results from both AV-Test Institute and AV-Comparatives. While I can do extensive hands-on testing of Windows antivirus, I rely more on the labs to identify which Mac products are most effective. As for my own hands-on testing, my programming skills are Windows-specific, as are my samples. Mac malware isn't as prevalent, varied, or virulent as what you find on Windows, but it still exists, and the independent labs that perform Mac security testing find plenty of samples to use. A simple set of tabs across the lets you switch from the main scan screen to a list of quarantined files and another list of files you’ve chosen to trust. The main window also gives quick access to real-time protection, scheduled scanning, and Safe Browsing. The main both of the window contains an image representing the selected target displaying Intego’s castle logo along with information about the most recent scan. ClamXAV and ProtectWorks both include a similar list of targets, though ClamXAV’s list includes important folders such as Downloads and Documents. On my test Mac, this includes an icon for the whole Mac along with icons for each of its hard drives. Naturally VirusBarrier is the main event.ĭown the left side of the main window you find a list of possible targets for scanning. NetBarrier is the firewall, which I’ll discuss below. NetUpdate simply manages product and malware definition updates. Once Intego downloads the latest malware definitions, it’s ready to go.Ĭlicking Intego’s icon in the menu bar at top reveals three components: NetUpdate, NetBarrier, and VirusBarrier. Norton 360 Deluxe for Mac is one of very few others with a restart requirement. Unlike most macOS antivirus tools, Intego requires a restart at install. As usual, you must give the antivirus Full Disk Access and other essential permissions. If you’ve bought a serial number, you enter or copy it at the beginning of the install process. Getting Started With IntegoĪnybody can download Intego and install a free trial. McAfee and Norton want at least Catalina (10.5). You need Mojave (10.14) or better to run Kaspersky or Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac. ProtectWorks goes a tad farther back, with support for Mountain Lion (10.8) or later in the current versions. That's good news for those rare Mac users who don't (or can’t) upgrade to every new version. Intego supports operating systems as far back as Mavericks (10.9) and, of course, anything newer. In addition, Intego offers a full personal firewall, something you don’t get with most Mac antivirus tools. A three-license subscription for Intego costs $66.99 per year, while for $84.99 you get five licenses. Those with more than one Mac get a better per-device price. The most common price for one license is $39.99, a price shared by Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, ESET Cyber Security for Mac, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, and Webroot. With a list price of USD$49.99 per year for one license, Intego costs more than most Mac antivirus software. Intego (accent on the first syllable) is effective against Mac malware, according to one lab, and the presence of a firewall component is welcome, but we’d still like to see detection of malware-hosting URLs, phishing frauds, and other dangers of the web. It also includes a full-featured firewall that both blocks attacks from outside and manages network permissions for programs loaded on the Mac. Intego Mac Internet Security, the latest release, is more than just an antivirus. For well over 20 years, Intego's central mission has been protecting Apple products. The vast majority of antivirus companies that publish security software for the Macintosh started with a Windows product first, but not Intego. ![]() But Spade's cool comebacks and his deft use of words, fists, or guns, as appropriate, are as tight as the plotting. I found this to be a fun read, but not a very exciting one, because like I said, the plot is old and everyone knows it if you've ever picked up a book influenced by Hammett (which is to say, if you've ever read any kind of mystery or crime thriller) or watched a film noir movie. This definitely applies to his resolution with Brigid O'Shaughnessy aka "Miss Wonderly." Throughout the story he often seems quite willing to throw in with the bad guys, and when he ends up not doing so, the reader is unsure whether it's because he never really intended to, or because he just decided the risks weren't worth the rewards. He's not quite an anti-hero, but he's a morally ambiguous hero he ultimately does the right thing, but only after calculating the pros and cons and deciding the right thing is in his best interest. Sam Spade is cool and cynical and dangerous, taking it as a matter of course when he's lied to and double-crossed, never getting upset when people point guns at him, but erupting into a violent temper at tactically appropriate moments. Hammett doesn't lay clues per se, though the reader might guess some of what's really going on before it's revealed (even without the advantage of this story having been part of the pop-culture zeitgeist for eighty years). Unlike a lot of other crime fiction, The Maltese Falcon doesn't have a "moral," and the "mystery" isn't really a puzzle for the reader to solve. The defining characteristics of "hard-boiled" detective stories are tough, cocky heroes in a gritty, unsentimental world. The only flaw I found in his writing was a few too many mentions of Sam Spade's "yellow-gray eyes." Everything is conveyed by action and dialog. He doesn't go into anyone's head, even that of the main character. Which is to stay, he tells a linear, concise story with just enough description to paint a clear picture, but with everything else pared away. But read it anyway: Dashiell Hammett writes like a whittler carving a stick into. Even if you haven't seen the movie, you'll still probably see the twists coming a mile away because you know the plot through cultural osmosis. This is one of those books that suffers from having been so often imitated. So begins The Maltese Falcon, which is full of sex and violence (neither being graphic or explicit, but definitely there) and femme fatales and scheming and double-crosses and cool one-liners. Soon after this, Thursby himself turns up dead, and Spade becomes a suspect. While tailing Thursby, Miles Archer is shot. A beautiful damsel in distress named Miss Wonderly hires them to find her little sister, who has supposedly run off to San Francisco in the company of a very dangerous man named Floyd Thursby. Sam Spade and his partner Miles Archer are private investigators in San Francisco. These are the ingredients of Dashiell Hammett's cooly glittering gem of detective fiction, a novel that has haunted three generations of readers. A perfumed grifter named Joel Cairo, a fat man named Gutman, and Brigid O'Shaughnessy, a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. Sam Spade, a slightly shopworn private eye with his own solitary code of ethics. Inverarity One-line summary: The classic hard-boiled detective tale: Sam Spade works the streets of San Francisco on a hunt for a priceless artifact and the murderer who killed his partner.Ī treasure worth killing for. |
